Director’s Commentary

WARNING: THIS IS A SAD AND GLOOMY MV. DON’T WATCH IF YOU WANNA REMAIN IN THE HAPPY STATE THAT THE FAIRY TALE MV ENDED WITH.

This is more of a sequel to FTL, rather than a MV. While watching FTL, I was surprised to find that Tan Si Tong was a real person. He was a significant advocate of Emperor Guangxu’s Reform. Unfortunately, the Reform lasted only 100 days. Mr. Tan refused to depart his fellow reformists and was executed in public by order of Empress Dowager Cixi.

I’ve always wanted FTL to continue Mr. Tan’s story until his tragic death. Now, through this MV, I’ve done so myself.

His last poem was narrated at the end of FTL. What’s more touching is his letter to his wife Li Run:

譚嗣同的《与妻書》

結縭十五年，原約相守以死，我今背盟矣！手寫此信，我尚為世間一人；君看此信，我已成陰曹一鬼，死生契闊，亦復何言。惟念此身雖去、此情不渝，小我雖滅、大我常存。生生世世，同住蓮花，如比迎陵毗迦同命鳥，比翼雙飛，亦可互嘲。愿君視榮華如夢幻、視死辱為常事，無喜無悲，聽其自然。我與殤兒，同在西方極樂世界相偕待君，他年重逢，再聚團圓。殤兒與我，靈魂不遠、與君魂夢相依，望君遣懷。戊戌八月九日，嗣同。

Run wife (as if in person):

Married 15 years; promised to be together until death; I shall now break our pact! When writing this letter, I’m still a person on earth; when you read this letter, I’ll be a ghost in hell; separated by life and death. Though my body will leave, my love will not die; my nominal self will diminish, but my great spirit will remain. Would you consider prestige and wealth as fantasy, death and insult as commonplace; feel no excitement nor despair; face all with indifference. Our dead son and I will wait for you in heaven; when we meet again, we’ll reunite. Son and I, our spirits are not far and will be with you in your dreams; may you dismiss sadness.

我跟小小和蝶蝶一樣，其實都希望《英雄刀少年》能演長一點，演到嗣同就義為止，因為‘死’能讓一個角色‘活’的更燦爛更深刻。

大家都知道我是中國盲，沒讀過中國歷史，對譚嗣同的認識是來自《英雄刀少年》，在這之前根本沒有聽過這個名字。就在我看的最投入的時候我爸跟我說：“他會死得很慘。” 我天真的回答：“你是編劇嗎﹖還沒看完就知道。” 於是，他跟我說了譚生的故事。我感激黃宗澤，他演活了這個角色，讓我認識黃宗澤的魅力，也讓我認識了譚嗣同這個歷史人物 — 不是他，我才沒興趣跟我爸上歷史課。

我要謝謝Karena推薦這首“訣別”，很貼題的曲。
